Iris Apfel – Fashion Icon

Iris Apfel is a 95 year old fashion icon. Iris is known for her quirky clothes, and silly personality. When she was younger Frieda Loehmann told her:

“You’re not pretty and you’ll never be pretty, but it doesn’t matter. You have something much better. You have style.”-Frieda Loehmann

Since then, Iris has pulled together a mass collection of clothes and accessories that she has collected from all around the world. The pieces of her closet have been shown at numerous museums across the globe including The Costume Institute as the MET.

Iris started her career working for Women’s Wear Daily, and then moved on to interior design. She worked with her husband Carl Apfel in their own textile firm called Old World Weavers. Together they worked on restoration projects in the White House for nine presidents from 1950 to 1992. Together Iris and Carl have travelled the world collecting textiles, jewelry, and clothes. This is when Iris’ love for fashion truly came to light. Her mass collection of clothing hails from all around the world.

She wears some of the most whimsical and unique pieces I’ve ever seen, and does so without any fear of judgment.

Iris challenges me to embrace my creativity. She marches to the beat of her own drum. She has taught me that fashion is about wearing what you love regardless of what others may think. She embraces different, and shows off her differences to the world. She’s fearless in what she wears, and uses her clothes as motivation to be as loud in her personality as her style. Iris inspires me to be who I want to be, and to dress for myself; not others.

“When you don’t dress like everyone else, you don’t have to think like everyone else.” -Iris Apfel

P.S. If you are as inspired by Iris as I am, I highly recommend checking out her documentary Iris on Netflix
